Chapter 17: The Co-Host

The Harlow Inn smelled of lemon polish and wood smoke.

I came in at five to ten on Wednesday and found the front desk crowded.

The manager stood behind it with her hands folded.

Beside the desk, a bridal party was holding a tasting at a long table.

There were six women and a mother with a clipboard.

Some of them had been there on Saturday. They looked up at me with open interest.

Brittany was waiting by the stairs.

She had a cardigan over yesterday's clothes and no makeup on. Her ponytail was coming loose.

"The baby's home," she said before I could ask. "My husband drove up. She's asleep on the couch with a popsicle."

"Thank you for coming."

"Thank you for staying on that island."

She tried to smile and it wobbled.

"I read the Inn's contract at three this morning in a plastic chair," she said. "Section nine says either host may cancel and direct the refund to the payer of record."

"I'm the payer of record."

"You are. I checked the receipts."

She walked up to the desk.

"I'm Brittany Thornquist, the second host on the Thornquist wedding contract. I'd like to cancel it today, and I'd like the deposit returned to Fern Merrow."

The manager looked at her for a long second.

"Mrs. Thornquist called on Friday morning," she said. "She asked us to hold everything in place."

"I know. I'm asking you not to."

"She's the first host on the paper."
