Chapter 18: What the Girl Saw
Nicholas was half out of the booth before I caught his sleeve.
"Don't," I said. "That's what they want."
The two men came in through the front door.
One was young with a sunburned neck. The other was older and heavier, in a Hartley Energy work shirt with the sleeves rolled.
They looked at the mechanic's booth, at his plate of half-eaten eggs, at the hat still on the seat.
Then the older one looked at us.
He walked over slowly and picked up the mechanic's coffee cup and drank from it.
"Mr. Santoro," he said. "Mr. Hartley says welcome to Texas. He's sorry he couldn't come down himself."
Nicholas didn't answer.
The man set the cup down in front of me.
"And Miss Ferraro. Mr. Hartley says your daddy should take it easy now. Hearts are fragile."
They walked out and got back in their truck and sat there in the lot with the engine running.
The waitress came over with her pad.
"Y'all want anything?"
"The check for his breakfast," Nicholas said. "And the back door."
