Chapter 22: Cameras
Nicholas was awake before I said a word.
He took the phone out of my hand and looked at the photo.
Then he was out of bed and pulling on his jeans.
"Call your parents' night man," he said. "Tell him nobody goes into that garage until we get there. Not him. Not anybody."
We were at East 78th Street in nine minutes.
The night man let us in through the side door, holding a flashlight, still in his slippers.
"Nobody came in," he said. "I swear it. The door hasn't opened since your father's car came back at six."
"Then how did somebody stand ten feet from it?" I said.
He didn't have an answer.
The garage was exactly the way it was in the photo.
Low ceiling. Yellow lights. My father's gray sedan and my mother's car, side by side.
Nicholas lay down on the concrete on his back.
He slid under my father's car with the flashlight in his teeth.
I stood over him and listened to my heart.
He was under there for a long time.
Then the other car.
When he slid out, there was oil on his shirt and dust in his hair.
