Chapter 23: Frozen
I stood on our front steps with the envelope in one hand and the phone in the other.
The photographer was still shooting.
"How does it feel to be broke, Christina?" he called.
I went back inside and shut the door.
Nicholas was at our kitchen table by ten.
He read the complaint twice.
Then he took out his checkbook.
I put my hand flat on it before he could open it.
"No."
"It's money. I have a great deal of it and nothing I want to spend it on."
"That's exactly why no."
He looked at me.
"Read page six," I said.
He turned to it.
The complaint said the photographer had been paid by "the defendant or persons acting with her, including her fiance."
"The minute a Santoro check pays for anything," I said, "they hold it up in court and say you bought the pictures. You bought the photographer. You'll be buying the accountant."
He was quiet.
"And I want to pay for this one myself," I said. "Bryant took my votes. His father took my money. I'd like to take something back with my own hands."
