Chapter 34: Wednesday
"Tina," I said out loud.
Nicholas looked up from the card.
"Who's Tina?"
"Me. In the other one."
"Your parents never called you that."
"Nobody did. Only him, and only in front of people. It made them think he was fond of me."
He turned the card over and back again.
"That isn't a feeling," he said. "That's a time and a place. A time and a place can be checked."
"It could be a trap."
"Then it's a trap we can check by Wednesday."
From the dining room my mother called that the coffee was getting cold.
I tore the card along its fold.
The front, with the number on it, went into the pocket of my dress.
The back I carried in and put down beside my father's plate.
He took his reading glasses off and set them on the tablecloth.
"Why would Bryant warn us about anything?"
"Because he wants something."
"What?"
"I'd rather find out after we still have the patents."
My mother looked at me over her cup.
She didn't ask how I could be so calm about a stranger's handwriting.
She'd stopped asking me that kind of thing last spring.
