Chapter 13: Savannah's Truth

Hattie put a mug of tea in Savannah's hands and a blanket over her shoulders.

Lucan stood by the stove with his arms folded and said nothing.

Savannah drank, and her teeth knocked on the rim.

"I'm not his mate," she said.

"We know," I said. "The council saw your neck."

"No. You don't understand. I'm not anybody's mate. I never smelled anything on him. I never felt a thing."

She looked at me with her swollen eyes.

"I was a waitress at the Pine Cup diner, down in the valley. Twenty-six, two jobs, three months behind on my sister's hospital bills."

"Who found you?" Lucan asked.

"Odessa."

Nobody moved.

"She sat in my section four mornings in a row," Savannah said. "She tipped fifty dollars on a pancake. The fifth morning she asked if I wanted to never be poor again."

Hattie sat down hard on the arm of the couch.

"She told me there was a good man in a good pack who deserved a real mate, and his wife was a cold woman who'd never given him one. She said all I had to do was be sweet. Wear yellow. Sit close to him at dinner. Say I felt a pull."

"A pull," I said.

"That's what she called it." Savannah wiped her face with the blanket. "She paid me eight thousand up front and promised twenty more when Dalton announced me. She promised my sister's bills too."
