Lucan's POV

I sat by the road fire until the stars turned, and I did not sleep.

Eloise's heat was still on my hands.

I could taste her on my mouth, and every nerve I had wanted to go back through that cottage door.

I stayed where I was.

I had waited six years, and I could wait one more night.

The guard who kept the fire pushed a flask at me and said nothing.

He had served my family for twenty years.

He knew better than to ask.

I had first seen her at the river.

It was the night before her wedding, and I had come to the Ember Ridge border to meet the old Alpha, who had asked for me and then died before I arrived.

I had walked down to the water to wait.

A woman stood at the edge of it in a plain grey coat, with a small tin urn in her hands.

She was emptying it into the current, a little at a time, and talking to it.

I heard her say, "I'll be all right, Dad."

I should have turned back.

I did not, because my wolf had gone absolutely still inside me.

I had never felt it do that.

It stood up in my chest and looked at her, and it did not move again.

She turned.

She had wet cheeks and a chapped mouth and hazel eyes, and she looked at me without fear.

"Sorry," she said. "Is this your side of the river?"

"It's the border," I said. "Nobody's side."

"Good," she said. "He wanted it to be nobody's."
