Chapter 23: The Better Pen
We reached the steps of City Hall at a quarter to ten.
The sky was high and blue, and the maples on the plaza had gone the color of brass.
My whole family stood on the wide stone stairs in their good coats.
My parents were there, and the grandmother leaned on her cane.
Romy wore a green dress and carried a bouquet she had refused to let me pay for.
My sister wore red.
Jocelyn had flown in at dawn.
"If anyone looks at you sideways," she said, "I'll paint them badly."
Then I saw him.
He stood by the last pillar on the left, alone, in a gray overcoat.
He had cut his hair.
He was holding nothing in his hands.
Ethan stopped on the stair beside me.
"I'll go," he said.
"No. We'll go together."
We walked down the steps, and Leighton straightened as we came.
"I'm not here to stop anything," he said. "I asked the clerk when it was. I wanted to know the date. I won't go in."
"Why did you come?" I said.
"I wanted to see one thing done right." He swallowed. "I looked at the wrong woman for twelve years. I wanted to see how the right one looks when she's happy."
Nobody said anything.
A pigeon crossed the plaza, and a bus sighed at the curb.
"Congratulations, Mrs. Sturgis," Leighton said.
"Thank you, Leighton."
He looked at Ethan.
"Take care of her."
"I will," said Ethan. "She doesn't need it, but I will."
Leighton nodded once, put his hands in his pockets and walked away across the plaza.
He did not look back.
I watched him until he turned the corner, and I did not feel anything but light.
