Chapter 10: Impossible

They carried Troy to Lucas's bedchamber, because Troy would not let go of Lucas's hand.

The healer cleared the room of everyone else and set her leather bag on the bed.

Lucas stood at the foot of the mattress with his arms folded.

Felix and Julius stood on either side of him.

Troy lay on his back, grey-lipped and sweating, and for once he did not look like a Prime.

The healer laid her palm on his stomach and closed her eyes.

She stayed that way a long time.

When she opened them again, she took her hand away.

She sat down on the edge of the bed without being asked.

"Prime Troy," she said. "I have been a healer for fifty years."

"I will say this once, slowly, so that you can hear me."

"Say it," Troy said.

"You are with child."

Nobody moved.

Troy blinked at her. "I'm what?"

"You are carrying. It is early, a matter of days, but it is quite clear."

"There is a heartbeat, and it is strong."

"I'm an alpha."

"Yes."

"Alphas don't..."

"No," said the healer. "They don't."

Troy stared at the ceiling for a long, long time.

Then he started to laugh.

It was a cracked, helpless sound, and he laid one big hand flat over his stomach.

"Examine the others," Lucas said quietly.

The healer put her hand on Felix, who stood very stiff and let her.

Her face changed again.

"And you, Prime Felix."

Felix's pale eyes went very wide.

"Me?"

"A day behind the first, but yes."

She turned to Julius. He didn't wait.

"I know," he said in a low voice. "I felt it this morning. I thought I was dying."

The healer looked at him a moment longer.

"You are not dying, Prime. You are about three moons short of a son or a daughter, as is each of you."

"I have never seen it. I have only read of it, in old books we were told were stories."

She snapped her bag shut, and left them to it.

For a time nobody said anything at all.

REWARD TWO, said the system, with what felt like smugness. ALPHAS WHO SPEND A NIGHT WITH YOU WILL CARRY YOUR CHILDREN. HOLD ON ALPHAS: TROY 61%, FELIX 54%, JULIUS 49%.

"Right," said Lucas. "That's the other reward."

"The what?" said Felix, very quietly.
