Chapter 23: The Offer

The system waited a whole month before it said anything else.

Lucas spent that month asleep, mostly.

He slept in the afternoons with a pup on his chest, and in the evenings with two.

At night he slept in the great carved bed with all three men pressed against him.

It was the best sleep of his two lives.

On the thirtieth night, the moon came up full over the orchard, and the words appeared in the dark above his pillow.

HOME IS AVAILABLE, said the system.

Lucas opened his eyes.

"Say that again."

THE MISSION IS COMPLETE. YOU MAY RETURN TO THE HUMAN WORLD. A DOOR WILL OPEN AT MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. YOU WILL WAKE ON THE COUCH YOU FELL ASLEEP ON, ALIVE, WITH THE LAST CHAPTER OPEN ON YOUR SCREEN.

"And this?"

He lifted the hand with the three rings.

THIS WORLD WILL GO ON WITHOUT YOU. THE SEAT WILL BE EMPTY. THE ALPHAS WILL KEEP THE PUPS.

Lucas lay very still.

Beside him, Troy was snoring faintly with his arm over the cradle where the girl slept.

Felix was awake, as he always was, watching the ceiling.

"You heard that," Lucas said quietly.

"Not the words," said Felix. "I heard you stop breathing."

Lucas sat up.

"I should have told you the first night. I'm telling you now."

He told them everything in the lamplight, with Troy and Julius awake and listening.

The couch, the cold flat, the job that nobody would remember him for, the book he had fallen asleep over.
