Chapter 15: Cadoc's Eye
Cadoc crossed the infirmary floor.
He stopped at the end of the last bed and went down on one knee, so his good eye was level with the boy's.
"I said I'd come," he said.
"You took a long time," the boy said, and his chin shook.
"I did."
"She said you were the nice one."
Cadoc's mouth moved, and nothing came out.
I put a bowl of broth in the boy's hands and walked away, because some things are not for a healer to watch.
Later the shepherd's wife took him home with her.
I heard the two boys arguing about a wooden sheep before they reached the gate.
Cadoc came to find me at dusk, in the herb room, with the lamp.
He stood in the door and turned his hat around and around.
"My socket," he said.
"It aches at every moon. I've said it was the weather."
"Sit," I said.
He sat on the stool, and I washed my hands.
"I'm asking," he said, stiffly. "That's the word."
"It's the word."
He untied the patch himself.
The scar ran from his brow to his cheekbone in a white ridge, and the lid had grown shut over what was left of the eye.
