Chapter 22: The Alpha's Fall
"Speak," the old woman said.
The steward lay on his knees in the trampled grass, cradling his ruined hand.
Gethin stood over him with his arms folded, no longer smiling.
"I serve the Alpha," the steward said.
"You served him," said the old woman. "Tonight you serve the truth, or I'll have the whipped men serve you."
Twenty Ashfen wolves who had felt his whip took a step closer, and the steward looked at them.
He began to talk.
"The honey came from the cellar at Ashfen Keep. Eleven jars, laid down years ago."
"The Alpha kept a key."
"For whom?" the old woman asked.
"For the ones who threatened him."
The meadow was so quiet that I could hear the river.
"The Alpha said she would be a better weapon than a knife, because they'd let her in," the steward said, not looking at me.
"And the tribute before her?" Cadoc said.
His voice was hoarse.
"A girl of sixteen. Her brother lived in our kitchen. The Alpha told her what would happen to the boy."
