Chapter 16: The Good Daughter

I stood in the doorway in Rafferty's shirt, with my hair standing up, and Hedwig looked at me without a flicker.

"The shirt suits you better than it suits him," she said. "May I come in? I'd like to say a thing before he's dressed."

I stepped aside.

She walked into the kitchen as though she owned it, which in a way she did, and set the velvet box on the marble.

She lowered herself onto a stool, hooked her cane on the island and folded her gloved hands.

"I'll be plain," she said. "I knew what he meant to do from the Friday. I wrote you down on a card."

"I left a fifth place at my own table and a photograph on that wall, and I let you find it."

"You did."

"I would do it again."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because I'm sorry anyway." She said it crisply, like a bill being paid. "Both are true."

I filled the kettle, mostly to have something to hold.

Behind me, the shower in the bedroom shut off.

"You will want to know why I let him," Hedwig said.
