Chapter 23: The Hotel Aldine

"Your lip is bleeding," I said.

"It's a good lip. It can take it."

I stood up from the long table, crossed the ballroom floor and put my thumb to the corner of his mouth.

He went still under my hand.

"What is that?" I asked, and looked at the shirt on his arm.

"It's yours," he said. "Or it was, for about eight hours."

"The hotel sent it to my office with the laundry, and I couldn't make myself throw it out."

It was white cotton, soft with washing, and when he held it up, I smelled cedar.

"Come with me," he said.

"Where?"

"Two blocks."

We went out through the garden gate, because it was the quickest way and because I wanted to.

It was cold, and the street lamps made long gold stripes on the wet pavement.

Last time I had walked this block with my tongue gone thick and my knees going, trying not to die in front of Sherilyn's house.

Now I walked it on my own two feet, with my hand in his, and nothing at all in my veins but my own pulse.

The Hotel Aldine's brass doors were lit.

We passed the bar without stopping, and the elevator carried us up to the ninth floor in a hush.

Suite 906 had a pale carpet, heavy curtains and an armchair by the window.

I knew the armchair before he said a word.
