Chapter 8: Visiting Hours

St. Brendan's Hospital had a new wing on the north side, and the name on its glass front was CALDECOTT PAVILION.

I had walked past that name a hundred times without thinking about it.

Now I walked under it at nine on Monday morning, in a borrowed sweater, with a billionaire's hand at my back.

My father's room was on the sixth floor.

The nurse at the desk looked up at me, then down at her screen.

"I'm sorry," she said. "Your name isn't on the visitor list."

"I'm his daughter."

"Mrs. Denning has restricted Mr. Denning's visitors to herself and Mr. Greaves. It's for his heart." She spoke with the worn politeness of someone repeating an order she did not like. "I can't override it."

My ears rang.

Sherilyn had thought of this on Saturday night while I was still standing on the terrace.

"He's the patient," I said. "He can decide who sees him."

"He's sedated for the morning, and she holds his medical proxy."

"Since when?"

"Since Friday."

I looked at the closed door down the corridor.

Rafferty stepped up beside me.

He had not said a word in the elevator, and I had been grateful.

"Good morning," he said, easily.

The nurse's face changed from tired to nervous.

"Mr. Caldecott. I didn't know you'd be here today."

"I wasn't aware I needed an appointment to visit my own building." He smiled, and it was friendly, and it made my skin prickle. "Miss Denning is my fiancee. She'll be seeing her father."

"Sir, the proxy..."

"Is a document that lets Mrs. Denning make medical decisions when Mr. Denning cannot." He leaned an elbow on the counter. "Is he unable to decide whether he'd like to see his daughter?"

The nurse bit her lip.
