Chapter 36: Seven Days

Kendrick looked at me for a long moment.

Then he turned around and went back to the grill.

"We open at five," he said, over his shoulder.

So at five the next morning I was on the step.

The inn across the street had given me a room on the top floor with a slanted ceiling and a window over the harbor.

I ran Harrow Hill from it.

Chloe called at six every morning with the kitchen.

The banquet captain called at seven with the floor.

Then I went across the street and ate.

Breakfast at five-thirty.

Lunch at noon.

I sat on the same stool at the end of the counter, every time.

Kendrick served me like anyone else.

"What'll it be?"

"Surprise me."

He never did.

My eggs came scrambled soft with too much pepper, every single morning.

On the second day the fishermen noticed.

On the third day they started taking sides.

The big one with the grey beard was mine.

He told me Kendrick had walked in three weeks ago with one arm and no coat, asking for any job at all.

"Washed dishes one-handed," he said. "Never complained. Never said where he came from."

"He's from a hill in Massachusetts," I said. "He used to run it."

"Huh," said the fisherman.
