Chapter 38: Kendrick's Letter

I turned the envelope over in my hands.

For Kendrick.

And under it, smaller, underlined twice.

When it's paid.

It was sealed.

"Did you read it?" I said.

"No," Rosemary said. "I wanted to. Every night."

She opened her front door for me.

The cold came in around our ankles.

"Tell him I'm sorry," she said. "He won't care. Tell him anyway."

I didn't open it.

I put it in the inside pocket of my coat, against my chest, and drove up the hill.

That night at eleven my phone rang from a Maine number.

"I bought a phone," Kendrick said.

"Rosemary is going to testify. Against him."

He was quiet.

"How?"

"Dad wrote her into the notebook. She'd never seen it."

I heard him breathe out, a long way off, over the harbor.

"And she gave me something," I said. "It's yours. I'm not putting it in the mail."

On the third of January I drove back to Rockport.

The diner was full of fishermen and steam.

The man with the grey beard raised his mug to me when I came in.

I waited until two.
