Chapter 20: Reopened
At ten on Christmas Eve, the plant was dark except for the dock.
The crew had strung colored lights along the dock office window, and they blinked red and green on the snow.
Elias was sitting on the edge with his boots over the drop and a thermos beside him.
He stood up when he heard my car.
He had brought a coat, and a second one over his arm.
"I wasn't sure which size you'd want," he said.
"You know my size."
"I know your size. I didn't know your mood."
I stopped one step below him on the concrete ramp, so that we were the same height.
"Forty-one companies," I said. "I found a typo in the Dayton one."
"Everyone does."
"My aunts sent a fruit basket to the hardware store," I said.
"It was the size of a toddler," he said.
"They called you sir for forty minutes."
"I know. I'm still shaking."
I laughed, and he heard what was under it, and his face went quiet.
"Did the terms hold?" he asked.
"I checked. Alma checked. She's been sending me reports with your lunch order."
"She wouldn't."
"Tuna on rye, no chips, Tuesday. The assignment was signed Wednesday, all forty-one pages."
His shoulders lowered, his breath fogging between us.
