Chapter 24: The Sink
I woke to the sound of it.
Tick.
Tick.
Sunlight lay across the quilt, and the radiator was knocking, and in the kitchen the faucet kept time.
Elias was already out of bed, standing in his jeans with his tool belt in his hand.
"No," I said.
"I was only going to look."
"You were going to fix it."
"It's what I do."
"Not this one," I said, and pulled his flannel shirt on over my head. "This one is mine."
He considered the belt, and the sink, and me.
Then he hung the belt on the doorknob and took a kitchen chair.
It was a small chair, painted yellow, left by some earlier tenant.
It made him look like a man at a child's party.
"Sit," I said.
"I'm sitting."
"Don't help."
"I'll hold very still."
The morning paper lay on the counter, and the headline said Huddleston had pleaded to wire fraud in two states.
I stepped around it.
I got down on my knees on the cold linoleum and opened the cabinet under the sink.
