Chapter 17: The Well
She fell for a long time.
The ring of daylight above her shrank to the size of a bowl, and then to the size of a coin.
She hit the ash feet first, and it took her.
It closed over her knees and her hips and stopped at her chest.
Far above, the grate scraped back over the mouth of the shaft.
An iron bolt slid home with a clank that came down the stone walls twice.
Then the only light was the coin of sky through the bars.
The ash was everywhere at once.
It pressed against her through the soaked hemp, on her legs and belly and back.
It didn't wait to be drunk.
It went into her skin from every side, and it kept coming.
A ladle had once taken her a whole night to bear.
This was sixty years of it, pressing in at once.
The gray climbed her arms past the shoulders and up her neck.
She felt it reach her face.
The burn was so big she couldn't find the edges of it.
She tried to push it down into her Core the way she had on the stage.
