Chapter 17: Item Three

Victor opened the door himself, in yesterday's shirt, with his hair still wrecked.

I stood behind him in the hall with my arms folded over the gray T-shirt.

Domenic looked at his brother from the shoes up.

"Hi, Vic," he said.

"Dom."

"I brought cannoli. The pistachio ones. You like those."

Victor took the box, because he is a man who takes a box when it is handed to him.

"I'd like to say something," Domenic said, "and I'd like to say it with my temper in my pocket."

"Go ahead."

"I'm not going to hit you. I thought about it on the way over. It would make a mess, and Nadia would write it up."

"I would," I said.

"You wrote three years of texts that I took credit for. You kissed my fiancée on my father's roof. And I'd still like to say, to your face, that Monday I'm coming for the job."

"It's yours to try for."

"It's not about her anymore. It's about us."

"It was never about her," Victor said. "It was about you not reading what you signed."

Domenic frowned, trying to find which paper that meant.

He couldn't, and he left.

I stood in the hall until I heard the elevator, and then I looked at the box in Victor's hands.

"Pistachio," Victor said. "He remembered."

"He remembered that you like them."

"It's the worst thing he's ever done," Victor said, and ate one.

On Monday at 8 a.m. there were nine chairs around the leadership table on the fifth floor, and every one of them was full.

Sal sat at the head with a mug of decaf.

He had folded his blanket on the chair beside him, so nobody would think he was cold.
