Chapter 19: Option A

Sal's study smelled of cedar and basil, and every wall of it was covered in framed sauce labels.

There were forty years of them, red and gold, with the oldest ones hand-lettered.

Sal sat behind the desk in a cardigan, with a cup of tea at his elbow, and a tablet leaning against the lamp.

Victor and I sat in two leather chairs that had been placed, I noticed, exactly four feet apart.

"It's Tuesday," Sal said. "Dean sent me a video."

He tapped the tablet.

It was the test kitchen, from above and a little tilted, and two men dusted white with flour sat on the floor.

"A fifty-pound sack," Sal said. "That's eleven dollars. I'm deducting it from both your salaries."

"Dad," said Victor.

"I'm not finished. Dean sent it with a cover note. He used the word concern four times."

"He recorded us without asking," I said.

"He recorded the whole afternoon, which is more than I've managed in forty years." Sal wiped his glasses. "He's taking it to the board on Friday, in a packet, with the county record. The board wants a settled family. He's going to show them two sons who throw flour and a hidden marriage."

"It's not a hidden marriage," Victor said. "It's a private one."

"Private is the word you use for hidden when your father's the CEO."

He put the glasses back on and looked at me.

"Nadia, I'm going to ask you a question, and I want a straight answer."

"Yes, Sal."

"What do you want?"

I had a legal pad on my knee.

At four that morning I had written my options on it.

Option A was annulment, and the risk was that I lose him.

Option B was stay as is, and the risk was Dean.
