Chapter 22: No Deck

Nadia's POV

At 8:58 on Friday, the lawyer's office called my phone, and I let Marcy answer it.

"There's no folder," she told them pleasantly. "It's in a pickle jar, in pieces. Please bill us for the jar."

She hung up and handed the phone back.

"Done," she said. "Your marriage has survived a clerical error."

"It wasn't a clerical error."

"It was in my version."

The roof was set up exactly as it had been the week before, with four hundred folding chairs and a cart of bagels.

This time there was no podium, no screen, and no microphone stand.

There was a plastic milk crate in the middle of the floor.

Victor sat on my left, and his hand was on my knee where everyone could see it.

I had not asked him to put it there.

He had done it on his own, in the open, in front of people.

I decided not to look at it too hard, in case it left.

Sal sat at the side in the padded chair, with a mug and the folded blanket.

Domenic walked out of the stairwell door in a plain white shirt, with no tie, and stepped onto the milk crate.

He held an index card.

His hands, I noticed, were not entirely steady.

"Good morning," he said. "There's no deck."

Somebody in the back laughed and then stopped.

"Last Friday I asked a woman to marry me, with slides, in front of all of you," Domenic said. "She said no, three times. She was right every time."

"I'm going to say three things. None of them has a risk line."

I looked at Victor, and he was looking at the crate.

"One. I didn't write the texts."

A murmur went along the rows.

"For three years, Nadia got a message at 7:02 every morning, and she thought it was from me. It was from my brother. Victor wrote them on Sundays and loaded them into my phone, and I took the thanks."
