Chapter 13: The Rules of the Game

I pulled the quilt over my hips and looked at him.

Armand and Léon had gone still on either side of me.

"You're late," I said.

"I'm not here to watch."

"Then what are you here for?"

"To hear you say it again," said Dominique. "That you want to go."

"I want to go."

"Then we do it properly. All four of us, at your table, tomorrow night. You will write the rules for the rest of it."

I nodded, and he sat down on the chair by the window and stayed there while the other two dressed.

On Monday night I put all four of them around my kitchen table and gave them each a glass of Léon's own wine.

The table was small, and their knees knocked under it.

I sat at the end with the notebook closed beside my plate and a new sheet of paper in front of me.

"Page fifteen," I said. "The game."

Auguste set down his glass.

"You wrote it already."

"I wrote the wish. Tonight I write the rules, and you sign them."

I uncapped my pen.

"Auguste is the man. Nobody else touches me while it runs."

"Agreed," Auguste said.

"He comes in on Thursday night, after the bar. My door is unlocked, and I don't know the hour."

"Nobody tells you," said Armand.

"Nobody tells me."

I wrote it down. My hand was steady, which surprised me.

"I say no. I say stop, I say please don't, I scream if the scene wants it. I fight. I bite, I kick, I scratch."

Léon shifted in his chair.

"And if you cry?"

"Then I cry. If it's real crying, it's part of the game. I want it to be real."

"Elise," Dominique said quietly.

"The only stop is three slaps of my palm on anything I can reach. The floor, the wall, his arm. If you hear them, it ends. Nobody argues. Nobody finishes."

I looked at Auguste.

"Not even you."

"Especially not me," he said.

His cold voice did something to the back of my neck.
