Chapter 4: The Release Form

Brandon's black SUV pulled up behind the stage at ten.

Piper got out first, holding two coffees and a clipboard.

"Lyd!" she said, and hurried across the grass. "I got you the oat milk one. You looked so tired last night."

She pushed the cup into my hand before I could answer.

It was the right order, and it was hot.

For a second, I almost thanked her.

The band came behind her, the drummer and the bassist carrying their cases, and Brandon last, in sunglasses.

He did not look at me.

"Everybody's here," Piper said brightly. "Perfect. I need two minutes, and then we'll rehearse."

She held out the clipboard. "It's just a family release. The label wants to use the photos from Wednesday for the festival posters, and they need both of us to okay it. Brandon already signed."

I took it.

It was one page, and the heading said Publishing Rights Assignment.

I read it standing up, with the coffee going cold in my other hand.

The first paragraph named "Basement Light." The second named my notebook.

The third said that all lyrics, melodies and arrangements created by Lydia Farrow in connection with the song were assigned in full to a company called Lund Keats Music.

The signature line at the bottom was empty, with my name typed under it.

"This isn't a photo release," I said.
