Chapter 22: Anniversary Dinner

The firm's anniversary dinner filled a hotel ballroom downtown, with forty round tables and a string quartet.

Gold lettering on the program said Planned by Keene Events.

Allie wore the green dress she'd been saving for a wedding, and Ross's mother wore navy, and Nate wore a suit that made it hard to look at anything else.

I carried the flat case with the register in it.

Table one stood nearest the stage.

There were four place cards on it for Ross's partners and their wives, and three more in gold script.

Mr. Ross Oxley.

Mrs. Oxley.

Mrs. Oxley.

Ross sat between the last two chairs with his hands flat on the cloth.

Sabrina sat on his left, in a white satin dress, smiling at everyone.

The managing partner's wife, a tall woman with a silver bob, looked at me when I reached the empty chair on his right.

"Which of you is Mrs. Oxley?" she asked.

"I am," Sabrina said.

"I am," I said.

The quartet played on.

Around the table, four people looked at their plates.

"I'll let the book answer," I said, and sat down.

Dinner went by in courses, and I ate every one of them.

Sabrina leaned toward Ross twice and touched his sleeve.

The second time he moved his arm away, and she saw me see it.

Between the salad and the main, the managing partner stood and tapped a glass.

"Every year our wives say a few words," he said, "and every year they're better than ours. Ross's wife, would you start?"

Sabrina was up before he finished the sentence.

She took the microphone off its stand and walked to the center of the stage with the spotlight following her.
