Chapter 15: The King's Last Word
The king's bedchamber smelled of camphor and old candle smoke.
Torin had walked her to the door in a gown the maid had hurried up, and he did not come in.
"He asked for you alone," the old valet whispered.
"He said if the prince is in the room, the Queen will say the prince put the words in his mouth."
Torin's hand tightened once on hers.
Then he let go, and the door closed between them.
The king lay propped on a heap of pillows under a great faded canopy.
He was fifty-eight and looked eighty.
His cheekbones stood out sharp, and his hands lay thin as paper on the blanket.
But his grey eyes, which were Torin's eyes, were wide awake.
"Come here, girl," he said. His voice was a dry scrape. "Let me look at you."
Aveline curtseyed and came to the bedside.
He studied her for a long moment.
"You gave my son back his ring in front of a hundred people," said the king.
