Chapter 6: Read It Aloud

"How do you know what he'll put in front of me?" I whispered.

Jericho straightened.

His eyes went to the ballroom door, where Cameron's dark tuxedo was cutting through the crowd toward us.

"Because I would," he said.

It was not an answer, and we both knew it.

Then Cameron arrived with a champagne glass in each hand, and Jericho smiled at him as if he were an old friend.

I picked up the first page and looked at it for a long time.

"I read slowly," I said. "I'm so sorry. Mother used to tease me."

"We have a meeting at eleven."

"I'll be quick."

I cleared my throat and began to read out loud.

I read one word at a time, in the sing-song voice of a child at a spelling bee.

"I, Thalia Markham, lead inventor of the stabilizer formula, do solemnly swear."

The lawyer coughed.

"That I have reviewed the early research notes of Lund Therapeutics, dated March of last year."
