Chapter 10: The File

Autumn's POV

"Say that again," I said.

Rhett kept his hands on the wheel and his eyes on the windshield.

"In March, your husband called me at eleven at night. He asked me to read a friend's medical file."

"Lydia's."

"Yes."

"And?"

"He flew her to Chicago the next week, and I read her scans in my own office, with both of them sitting across from me." His voice was low and even. "Lydia has been in remission for eleven months. She was in remission then. She is in remission now."

The baby moved under my hand.

I looked at the printed picture of its curled hand, and I didn't see it at all.

"Remission."

"There is no disease in her scans. There was no treatment scheduled. There was no reason for any of what Clifton told me he was afraid of."

"What he told you."

"He said she had a few months."

"That's what he told me yesterday."

"I know."

"You said it to his face?"

"In plain words. I said she was well." He swallowed. "Clifton said I had never liked her, and he hung up. I called back twice. He didn't answer."

I could hear my own breathing in the car.

"Did you tell your mother?"

"My mother doesn't take my calls."

"Did you tell anyone?"

"No."

"Did Lydia say anything?"

"She stopped me in the hallway." He looked at me for the first time. "She said, please don't."

I opened the car door.

"Autumn."

"Three months," I said.

My voice shook, and I hated it.

"You knew three months ago, and he married me anyway, quietly, in a clerk's office, and you let me walk down that hall yesterday."

"I didn't know you existed."

"You knew he was lying."

"I knew he wasn't listening. I told myself he'd check the numbers. I told myself he was a grown man." His hands tightened. "That is not an excuse. I'm only telling you what I thought."
