Chapter 18: Brant Stands Up
Brant did not look at the photographer.
He did not look at Lyle either.
He walked across the ballroom floor with three hundred people watching, and I heard each step on the polished wood.
He stopped in front of the guard who had my arm twisted behind my back.
"Let go of him," he said.
The guard glanced at Lyle.
"Mr. Collier," Lyle said, in the soft voice of a man catching a child with a lighter.
"You're tired. You've had a very hard week."
"Let him go."
"Brant."
"I won't say it a third time."
The guard released my arm.
Feeling flooded back into my hand.
Brant turned to face the room.
I had seen him do this a hundred times, on a stage, in a pulpit, on a couch with a bright lamp on his cheekbone.
This was not that.
His hands hung at his sides, and one of them was shaking.
"I need to say something," he said.
