Chapter 16: Wash Day
We went in the first carriage that could be harnessed, and I held on to the strap all the way down Bermondsey Street.
Hugh sat beside me with his hat off.
Tilly sat opposite with a flat iron in her lap, taken from the Denholm laundry.
The Dowager's two tallest footmen rode on the back, in livery, with cudgels.
The crew had already begun.
They were forty men in leather aprons with crowbars and sledges, and a wagon behind them stacked with timber.
Two of them stood on the roof of the nearest wash shed, tearing off slates.
The slates smashed on the cobbles one after another with a noise.
The agent stood by the pump in his good brown coat with a paper in his fist.
The laundresses of Mill Court stood in the shed doorways, thirty of them, and each held a flat iron that had been in the fire.
The irons glowed a dull orange at the edges.
Nobody had told them to.
