Chapter 17: The Earl's Offer
The Earl called at Denholm House on Monday at ten, with his daughter behind him.
He did not ask for the Dowager.
He asked for the Duke, and he asked for him alone.
Hugh received him in the study.
I was not meant to hear, but the study door has a keyhole, and Tilly has a very good ear.
We knelt side by side in the corridor.
"Your Grace," said the Earl's voice, soft as a wet cloth.
"I shall be brief, since you are a busy man."
"You have an impostor in your house."
"I am aware of the claim, my lord."
"I do not claim it, Denholm."
"I know it."
"Your coachman has a loose tongue and a taste for gin."
"My runner followed your carriage to Bloomsbury."
"He watched you leave the Foundling Hospital with a laundress on your arm and a grey-faced old woman behind."
"I have since paid a clerk there ten guineas, and I hold a copy of the register page."
