Chapter 15: Twenty Weeks
The technician moved the wand low across Jamie's belly, and said, "Do you want to know?"
"Yes," Jamie said.
"No," Roman said, at the same moment.
They looked at each other.
"You don't want to know?" Jamie said.
"I want to know. I wanted to say no, so that you could say yes."
"That makes no sense."
"It made sense in my head."
The technician, who had been told nothing about the man in the corner and was working very hard at it, pressed her lips together.
"She's a girl," she said.
The screen showed a profile in grey, a tiny nose and a curled fist against the cheek.
The fist opened.
The fingers spread, one at a time.
"Oh," Jamie said.
"Twenty weeks, perfect," the technician went on, somewhere far away. "Four chambers, spine, kidneys. She's a little bit shy about her face, but..."
Roman made a sound.
Jamie turned his head.
Roman stood against the wall with his arms hanging at his sides.
One tear was sliding down the good side of his face and one down the scarred one.
They fell at the same speed.
He made no move to wipe either.
"It's the gel," he said, in a voice like gravel in a pipe.
"The gel."
"It gets in the air. It's irritating."
"It's on my stomach, Roman."
"It's in the air."
Jamie held out his hand.
Roman crossed the room in two strides and took it, and put his forehead down on the back of it.
The technician found something terribly important to do with the printer.
