Chapter 23: The Other Side
Esme was three months old when Jamie woke up and knew.
He lay on his side in the grey light with a leg hooked over Roman's, and his body felt like his own again.
His belly was flat.
His head was clear.
He had slept six hours in a row, which had happened twice in three months.
The first thing in his mind when he opened his eyes was not the baby, or the ledger, or Constance.
It was a left side.
The skin below his ear, bare and pale, with nothing on it.
"You're awake," Roman said, without moving.
"How did you know?"
"You stopped breathing like you were counting."
"I've been awake for a minute."
"What are you thinking?"
Jamie turned onto his back and looked at the ceiling.
The sea was making its slow sound beyond the glass.
At the far end of the room, Esme slept in the bassinet he had been telling himself, for a month, to move to the nursery.
"I'm not in a nest," he said. "I'm not in heat. I'm not pregnant. I slept for six hours. I'm entirely myself."
"Yes."
"And I still want it."
Roman went still, and then slowly propped himself up on an elbow.
He looked down.
The light fell across the whole of his face, the smooth side and the scarred one, and he was not turning it away.
"Say it, then," he said, very low. "In this room. I promised."
"Bite me."
"Ask properly."
"Roman Aldecott," Jamie said, "I'd like you to bite me again, on the left, and I'd like it to hold. I'd like it to be a choice. I'd like it to be the second thing we did on purpose."
Something moved in Roman's throat.
"Yes," he said.
"You said you'd answer before I finished."
"I answered before you started."
