Chapter 7: Live
By morning there were nine thousand comments under the apology.
"She apologized. Your move, Bonus Mom."
"If she doesn't show up she's the villain now."
"Grown women hug it out. Be the bigger person, Renee."
Jen read them out loud over cereal in a voice like a game-show host.
"You're not going," she said.
"I'm going."
She put her spoon down. "Ren. It's a trap with a ring light."
"I know what it is." I texted Stacy for the first time in a week. "I'll come at two. Callen is not in the room, in the house, or on the camera. If I see him on it, I walk."
Stacy wrote back instantly.
"Of course, sweetie! Whatever you need! xoxo"
Stacy's house was in a new subdivision off Africa Road, a big gray farmhouse with black window frames and a porch swing nobody sat in.
Her living room was her studio.
White couch, white rug, a fake fig tree, two ring lights on stands, and her cameraman crouched behind a camera on a tripod.
A laptop on a stool showed the live chat scrolling so fast it blurred.
Forty-one thousand people watching.
"You came!" Stacy said, and opened her arms.
She was in a cream sweater with the sleeves pulled over her hands. Her hair was in a messy bun that had taken an hour.
I sat down on the far end of the couch.
She sat down close to me, too close, knee to knee.
"Everybody, this is Renee," she said to the lens. "My son's bonus mom. And I want to say, in front of all of you, I'm so sorry I hurt you."
She held out her arms again.
"Can we hug?"
The chat scrolled. HUG HUG HUG.
"I want one sentence first," I said.
Stacy's arms stayed out. "Anything."
"Say it wasn't funny."
