Chapter 22: No Record

Ainsley's POV

I saw her first, across the courthouse square.

She sat on a stone bench by the fountain in the camel coat, with her hair in a knot.

The coat was stained at the hem.

She had one shoe in her hand and was turning it over in her hands.

"Heath," I said. "Don't turn around."

He turned around.

Summer lifted her head, and our eyes met.

There was no pale light in hers now.

They were just blue, and red-rimmed, and very tired.

She stood and walked toward us in one shoe.

Heath's father stepped in front of his son.

"Don't," he said.

"Mr. Gresham, I only want to talk to Ainsley."

"Say it from there."

She stopped ten feet away.

"I haven't got anywhere to go," she said.

Nobody answered.

"The motel threw me out. They said my card was a fake. The bank said I have no account. The car isn't mine." Her voice shook. "I went to the clinic, the one I booked, and they said they'd never heard of me."

"The System wrote you a past," I said. "It took it back."

"You knew that would happen."

"I didn't. It happened to me, and I don't know how long."

"Then you know what it's like." She took a step. "Ainsley, you were out in the cold with nothing. You scrubbed floors."

"I did."

"Help me."

"No."

Her mouth fell open.

"You wanted to take his whole life in a week," I said. "You told sixty people he'd die anyway and you were the kind one. I'm not going to help you."
