Chapter 6: The Second Host

The next morning somebody knocked on the penthouse door at seven.

Heath was in the shower, so I opened it myself.

The blonde from the elevator stood on the mat holding two coffees and a paper bag.

"Hi," she said. "I'm Summer. Summer Everhart, from 1402. I heard the walls here are thin, so I came to apologize for last night."

"For what?"

"For smiling at you like a creep in the elevator." She held out the bag. "Lemon scones. I couldn't sleep, so I baked."

She looked so sincere that I almost took them without thinking.

I took them.

"Can I borrow you for five minutes?" she said, lower. "On the balcony. It's about the thing we both know about."

I looked at her.

I looked at the empty air beside her ear, where a faint gray square blinked once and went out.

I stepped aside and let her in.

On the balcony the lake was flat and silver under a low sky.

Summer set the coffees on the railing and leaned her elbows next to them.

"You're the first host," she said. "I read the roster when I arrived. Ainsley Fallon, in this world for three years, mission active."

"There's a roster?"

"There's always a roster." She smiled at me, friendly and a little rueful. "It's not a secret. Nobody told you?"

"Nobody tells me anything."

"That's the System." She sighed. "Okay. Here's the deal. We have the same target. Same number, over the same man. But the number is yours until it isn't. His affection for you is at 72%. For me, it's 6."

"And?"

"And the first one to 100% collects. The second one gets nothing."

My hand tightened on the railing.

"That's not a deal," I said. "That's a race."
