Chapter 7: Dock Repairs

I took the printout into the ladies' room and locked myself in a stall.

The first page said I did not exist.

A second sheet was stuck to the back of it, still warm from the printer.

It was an accounts payable run for Gresham Lumber, forty lines long, and Lyle's initials were on every approval.

One vendor repeated at the top of the page, every quarter, for two years.

*Lakeview Marine & Dock Services. $38,000.*

I knew that name.

Last time, in the third year, an auditor had said it out loud at a dinner table, and Lyle had gone white and left before dessert.

He had been caught eventually.

This time I could catch him first.

I folded both pages, put them in my clutch, and went out to find him.

He was waiting in the corridor outside the ballroom, alone, with his back against the wall and his hands in his pockets.

"I figured you'd come looking," he said.

"You wanted an answer."

"I want you to leave." His voice was friendly and level. "Walk out tonight. Tell Heath it isn't working. Otherwise I put that page in front of his father, and he finds out his son's girlfriend is nobody from nowhere."

"You printed my file on the office printer."

"So?"

"So you printed everything else in the queue, too."

I pulled the second sheet out of my clutch and held it up.

His face stayed the same, and then it didn't.

"Lakeview Marine & Dock Services," I read, loud enough to carry. "Thirty-eight thousand a quarter. Eight quarters."

"Give me that."

"That's three hundred and four thousand dollars for dock repairs, Lyle."

He reached for the paper.

I stepped back and kept reading.
