Chapter 14: The Suit

The suit hung on the closet door in a garment bag, and Perrin looked at it for a full minute.

"No," he said.

"You haven't seen it," Malcolm said from the bathroom doorway.

"I know what it is," Perrin said. "It's navy, and it cost more than my rent for a year, and I didn't pick it."

"It's wool," Malcolm said.

"Malcolm."

"It's a good navy."

Perrin crossed his arms.

He was standing in the master bedroom in Malcolm's bathrobe, which came to his shins, with his hair still wet from the morning.

They had slept there for three nights now, and nobody had woken at three.

"You said you'd ask," Perrin said.

"I ordered it before I said that," Malcolm said.

"Then you should have unordered it."

"I tried. The tailor had already cut the cloth."

"Ask first," said Perrin. "It's the only rule I made you."

For a second Malcolm looked wounded.

Then he put his hand to his chest and bowed from the waist.

"Perrin Hallam," he said gravely. "May I please buy you a suit? I want you to walk into my building on Friday, and I want nobody to look at you as if you don't belong."
