Chapter 4: Wren Hill
The lab called me at ten past six the next morning.
I was already dressed and sitting on the edge of the bed, with Kyle asleep on his side of it.
I carried the phone into the hall and answered in a whisper.
"Ms. Mackey?" a tired woman said. "You asked us to confirm the result to you directly. It's a match. Probability of paternity, ninety-nine point nine nine."
"Thank you," I said.
"There's a gentleman who paid for the rush. He asked me to tell you it's yours either way."
I stood in the hall for a while after she hung up.
Then I left a note on the kitchen counter that said, "Early appointment, see you at the bank," and I drove out of Linden Road before the sun cleared the roofs.
Wren Hill is on the north side of the river, where the streets curve and the houses sit back from them.
The Hallett house was brick, three stories, with a wide porch and a garden behind a wall.
Simon opened the door before I knocked.
"You took the test," he said.
"I took the call," I said. "It's done."
He nodded once and stepped back to let me in.
There was a smell of floor wax and old books in the hall, and under it something medical.
"He's in the sunroom," Simon said. "He's been up since four."
Conrad Hallett was sitting in a high-backed chair with a thin tube running under his nose.
He was tall, even folded into that chair, and his hands on the arms were big and spotted.
He tried to stand when I came in.
"Please don't," I said.
He sat back down and looked at my face, and he looked for a long time.
