Chapter 13: Headlights
Emiliano's truck door opened behind me.
"Stay there," I said, without turning around.
The door closed again.
Rodrigo stood on the sidewalk with the pink hat in both hands.
It was the hat from his mother's gift bag, the one she had carried to my friend's hallway with the police.
He looked at my blouse, buttoned wrong, and then at the truck, and then at me.
"I'm not here about that," he said.
"It's two in the morning."
"I know what time it is."
His voice was thin.
He had not slept, and he had not shaved, and the easy smile was gone.
"The bank sent a letter to the house," he said. "About the frozen account. It lists every deposit for thirty-one months."
I waited.
"Five thousand dollars on the first of every month. From a place called Gulf Coast Fiduciary."
He held up the hat in his fist.
"I called a man at the bank on his cell phone at midnight. He said it isn't family money. He said it's a trust, with your name on it."
"Yes."
"Alma, whose money is it?"
I looked at him for a long moment.
Thirty-one months I had been certain.
I had been certain every first of the month, when he set down the pouch and smiled at his mother across the table.
"It's mine," I said. "My father left it to me. Five thousand dollars a month until I'm thirty-five, from his house and his savings and his life insurance."
He didn't move.
"Your mother held a power of attorney I signed on our wedding morning. She drew every payment into the account that paid your envelopes."
