Chapter 15: Rain

"What other one?" I asked.

"The restaurant fella. From Cincinnati."

He leaned on the roof of my car.

"He called here in July. Looking for her. Said she'd stopped answering him."

"Why would he call you?"

"Because she told him she was pregnant. In June. Told him it was his and she needed time."

He shook his head.

"Then she turned around and told me it was Jason's. I don't know whose it is. I know my daughter."

I drove home with both hands on the wheel and the radio off.

I didn't tell anyone.

Not Grady. Not my assistant.

A boy's whisper and an old man's phone call were still just things people said.

The next Friday it rained all day.

Not a drizzle. A hard, cold October rain that flooded the gutters on my street by four o'clock.

I was at the kitchen table with the gala seating chart spread out in front of me.

My version.
