His Ex Never Left the Family, So I Left the Marriage novel · Chapter 23 of 24

Chapter 23: Wednesdays

I stopped in the middle of the dance floor.

Two hundred and twenty people waited to see what I'd do.

Before I could turn around, a chair scraped at the head table.

Max had stood up.

His clip-on tie was crooked. His glasses had slid down his nose.

He walked down off the platform and down the center aisle, past every table, in his good shoes that were a size too big.

Nobody stopped him either.

He came to me and took my hand.

Then he turned around and looked at his father.

"She's not walking out on me," he said. "She's the one who comes."

Jason opened his mouth.

He closed it again.

I crouched down in front of Max, in my black dress, in the middle of the floor.

"Listen to me. I'm not going anywhere. I'll be at school on Wednesday at three-ten, same as always."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

I stood up and looked at Jason across the room.

"Three-ten," I said. "Wednesday. Don't make it weird."

Somebody at the installers' table laughed out loud.
