Chapter 10: Bruce's POV
Bruce's POV
I woke up alone in a bed that smelled like her.
Her note was on the pillow: "School. Complaint. Back by six. Feed Biscuit. L."
I read it three times.
By nine I had the complaint on my laptop, forwarded by Leah from the principal's office.
It was filed in the name of a "concerned district parent."
It said Leah had married "for show" within hours of a public scandal, and that the district should review her fitness to work with children.
The parent had no name.
The file did.
The PDF had been made on a law firm's template, and Landry Motors had used that firm for twenty years.
I went upstairs and opened the bottom drawer of my study desk.
It held one sheet of paper, folded in four.
I didn't need to unfold it. I knew what it said.
Three years ago I had written to a school nurse in Columbus.
I had sat beside her for four hours at a children's hospital raffle, and I couldn't stop thinking about how she laughed when they gave her the toaster.
I signed the email with my name and my phone number.
Two days later an answer came from her address: "Not interested. Please don't contact me again."
I printed it, and I never wrote again.
That was the whole story, as I understood it.
Landry Motors was lit up like a stage when I got there.
Travis sat alone in the glass office at the back, with his feet on the desk and a coffee in his hand.
He didn't stand up.
"Bruce. Come in."
I put the complaint on his blotter.
