Chapter 15: The Demonstration
Roderick asked Lucan to terrify the village and was refused in front of it.
"I'm not giving you another demonstration," Lucan said.
Roderick touched the silver crest at his own throat.
"Then I'll show them what your protection is worth."
His cousin took a pin out of the clasp.
Elspeth stood, but Roderick had already pricked his own finger.
Lucan turned his face away.
The window behind him reflected Roderick's raised hand.
I saw him catch the little red bead in the glass.
His fingers missed the chair arm.
I caught his shoulder while Winnie pushed the seat beneath him.
He sat hard, closed his eyes, and fainted.
My aunt made a sound of triumph before she remembered which one of us was sitting down.
"Not a rehearsal," I told her.
She shut her mouth and came to help me.
The village watched without moving.
Roderick held his hand higher, waiting for the proper horror.
