Lucan's POV
After claiming my house, Roderick took off my portrait cloak and threw it over a chair.
It would have been easier to resent the theft of wool than everything before it.
I picked it up before he could put it on again.
He held out his hand, assuming I meant to return it.
I folded it and gave it to Winnie instead.
"Put it away," I said.
"I won't need it."
My cousin looked at my ordinary shirt.
"You intend to negotiate?"
"I intend to stop pretending your orders are mine."
He stood in front of the drawing room door.
People still waited in the hall to collect their coats.
I could hear Hettie helping someone find a lost glove.
She had stayed through an ugly afternoon without promising me anything.
I wanted to go to her.
That would have been easier than facing him too.
I stayed.
"The household won't serve you unless they choose to," I said.
