Chapter 21: The Returned Plate
Lucan came to Leeds on the third Saturday of our courtship carrying the dinner plate.
Agnes saw it through the glass beside our new front door.
"He's brought it back," she said.
"Perhaps he expects a refund."
We had moved into the attic rooms the previous week.
My aunt had hung her best pictures herself and left the landlord's reply beside the kettle.
There were no three years of rent in it.
There was a smaller figure we could afford.
Lucan ducked through the door and straightened too soon.
The low beam corrected him.
Agnes reached for his arm, then remembered she'd never managed to make him fall when she wanted to.
"I should have warned you," she said.
"I found it," he replied, rubbing his head.
He gave her the plate with its cloth cover still on.
She lifted the corner and found six little pies.
