The wedding candles were holding the dining room doors open.
Winnie had put the heaviest holders on the floor and left the candles unlit.
Elspeth admired the arrangement as we went in.
"Atmosphere with a practical purpose," she said.
Agnes took the chair beside her and put down her own handkerchief.
She hadn't offered it to me all morning.
I kissed her cheek and handed her the bread basket so she could get the first roll.
Lucan's chair stood beside mine rather than at the head of the table.
He pulled it out for himself and sat while the guests were still finding places.
The village woman looked surprised.
Then she sat too, and everybody else followed at their own pace.
There were several red dishes among the food.
