Marlow's Diner had not changed in the one place that mattered, which was the smell.
Coffee, fryer oil, and warm pie, the same as the first morning I woke up behind that counter.
Bridget got to the door ahead of me and held it open.
"After you, Ms. Licensed to Touch Dogs."
"Stop."
"Never."
The owner stood behind the register with a dish towel over his shoulder.
He looked at the white coat I had worn over a sundress, and then at me, and he nodded once, gruffly.
"Booth four's yours," he said. "Coffee is on the house. Don't order the fish."
"What's wrong with the fish?"
"It's been wrong since 1998."
A retired mailman at the counter lowered his newspaper and gave me a salute with two fingers.
Booth four had been pushed against a long table made of three more tables.
Every chair had a napkin folded on it.
