Chapter 14: The Rules
The aide handed him the bedpan on Wednesday morning.
"Room three," she said. "He's shy. Don't talk about yourself, and don't look surprised."
Matthias had spent ten years in operating rooms, and he held the thing in both hands.
"Level," the man in room three told him from the bed. "You're tilting it. What kind of doctor are you?"
"The kind who doesn't do this."
"Obviously."
It took four tries.
By the end the old man was laughing so hard that the aide had to come and check his oxygen.
"Not a word to the staff," the old man whispered. "I haven't laughed since August."
At ten the aide put a basin in his arms and a towel over his shoulder.
"Room nine. She's had swollen feet since Sunday and she won't let me near them. She doesn't like my hands."
The woman in room nine was ninety and furious about it.
She sat by the window with her ankles puffed and shiny.
She looked at his suit trousers, which he had worn for three days.
"I want a girl," she said.
"There aren't any girls on at the moment."
